RC702 Disks

 

This is a collection of software for RC702 in the form of floppy disk images that have been created from old floppy disks. The images are stored in IMD format. This is the format used by ImageDisk by Dave Dunfield. The .IMD format is described in the documentation for ImageDisk. For the disk formats I have been able to decode so far, I have included a zip file with the files extracted from each disk image.

Please notice that most of the disk images in this section is the intellectual property of other companies or individuals. Many of these companies are no longer in existance or they no longer sell these products. I have not included any material in this archive which I believe has current commercial value. If you are aware that any of the material represented here is being sold or otherwise distributed by a current owner, please contact me as soon as possible and I will remove it from the site immediately. It is not my intention to compromise any active distribution channel being operated by or on behalf of the owner of the property rights to this material. The files presented in this archive are for backup/recovery purposes only. By downloading files you acknowlege that you have valid license to use any software contained therein. You must obtain permission from the owner of the material if you plan to use it for any other purpose.

Some of the images contain bad sectors. These images were produced from floppy disks that are more than 30 years old. I was surprised that these floppy disks were still readable at all, but some of the floppies had sectors that could not be read. These sectors are marked as bad in the IMD file format, so they are easily identifiable. I have kept the contents of the bad sectors in the images, although these sectors most likely contain errors.

My own floppy disks

 

I have created disk images of my old floppy disks for RC702. You can download these images here. All the RC702 disks are 5 1/4" double side/double density with a nominal capacity of 360 KB. There are normally 40 tracks on a 5 1/4" floppy disk, but it seems like only the first 35 tracks contain formatted data. There are two different basic sector layouts for the disks: CP/M and RC layout.

The CP/M disks have the following layout:

The first track contains the boot sectors. The remaining tracks are formatted as a CP/M 2.2 disk, but with a 2:1 interleave, so the sector ordering on a track is 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, 3, 5, 7. The block size is 2K, so there are 4 sectors per block. The directory is stored in the first two blocks on track 2. Using this information I have been able to extract all the files from the CP/M floppy disks, which can be found in the ZIP files below.

The RC disks are double side, single density, FM, formatted with 16 sectors per track, 128 bytes per sector, and 35 tracks per side. This layout is used by some of the ID COMAL and UCSD Pascal disks. I have not yet figured out the file system format for these.

I also have a few 8" floppy disks. There are two formats: type 1 and 2. Type 1 is single-side, single-density (SS/SD), and has 77 tracks with 26 sectors of 128 bytes. Type 2 is double-side, double-density (DS/DD) where the first cylinder with the boot sector are have a special format:
